5G vs WiFi/LTE (at events)

Private 5G

Wi-Fi/LTE

Control
You own capacity & priorities (SIMs, QoS).
Shared with guests ; limited/no control.
Spectrum
Licensed/local → low interference.
Unlicensed (Wi-Fi) + shared carrier airwaves → contention.
Reliability
Predictable, SLA-able lanes for POS, ticketing, cameras.
Best-effort ; performance varies with crowd load.
Uplink at scale
Many parallel 4–20 Mb/s video feeds per sector.
Collapses under peak demand.
Mobility
Seamless handover for moving staff/cameras.
AP hops/dropouts ; carrier handovers not under your control.
Security
SIM/eSIM identity per device ; clean segmentation.
Passwords/SSIDs ; carrier NAT ; limited segmentation.
Deployment
Pop-up live in minutes ; move to next site.
Dense APs/cabling.

Business Outcomes

Item

Assumptions

Outcome

Cashless revenue protection
50,000 attendees × €12-25 avg spend × 80% card share × failure-rate drop (3% → 1%)
€10,000 - €20,000 /
event
Production cost shift
TV production van
rental ≈ €6,000*/day.
Pop-up rental = €133
/day.
~ €5,000 / event
Total savings
PoS + TV product van
€15,000 - €25,000 /
event saved

Revenue protection/uplift

Fewer POS failures during peaks : even a 2% reduction in failed transactions can be €10–€20k per event (assumes 50k attendees, €12–€25 avg spend, 80% card usage during peaks).

Production savings

Replace some TV production van tasks with 5G contribution : fewer rigging hours and cables; faster highlight turnaround (TVTechnology reports the trend across live production).

Better guest satisfaction

Shorter queues, working apps, smoother entries; richer content (multi-angle, AR).

Lower infra & faster roll-in/out

Private 5G can reduce radio count vs. dense Wi-Fi and is faster to deploy/move between sites.

Recent Deployments by Firecell

Keukenhof Festival (Netherlands)

“Cashless, anywhere in the park”

Need : Tens of POS terminals spread across ~10 hectares ; public networks overloaded at peak.

What Firecell did : Deployed a complete on-site Private 5G network, with SIM-enabled POS terminals connected on a dedicated segment with fiber cable backhaul to keep transactions isolated from guest traffic.

Three mid-power units on roofs and masts provided coverage across concessions and venue.

Firecell on the Field

Warsaw Music Festival (Poland)

“Wireless live cameras, no OB cabling”

Need : 3 professional cameras streaming live to YouTube/Facebook; avoid long cable runs and heavy rigging.

What Firecell did : Stood up a Pop-Up Private 5G near FOH ; provisioned camera encoders on a video segment with uplink priority ; targeted ~6–8 Mb/s per 1080p feed ; used an edge box for on-site recording + handoff to cloud + telescopic mast + UPS for resilience. Go-live in <15 minutes with minimal cabling ; RF aimed to cover stage + pit.

* exact radio count depends on steel density, geometry and zones

Event-fit KPIs

99.9–99.99%
availability during event window (with spares & on-site NOC).
4–8 Mb/s
per camera uplink, aggregate uplink per sector sized for camera count + POS.
<20 ms
for production intercom/IFB* and stage foldback over the private network.
>99.5%
PoS success rate during peaks.
<15 min
Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) bridges brief outages to avoid loss of communication.
* IFB = interruptible foldback (monitoring and cueing system used in television, filmmaking, video production…)
