What is Open RAN?

Experts predict that Open RAN technology will take over the traditional telecom market by 2030. By investing in this now, Europe is securing a strong position in the future of telecommunications.

Firecell’s Key Role in the Project

Firecell is one of the key contributors to 5G-OPERA, providing the private 5G Open RAN network for the project. The company develops cost-effective solutions that simplify the deployment of private 5G networks for businesses.

Its technology is particularly valuable for small companies that require reliable connectivity but may find traditional telecom infrastructure cost-prohibitive. By advancing accessible and flexible private 5G solutions, Firecell plays a crucial role in helping European businesses remain competitive in the digital age.

Dr. Florian Kaltenberger from Eurecom, a leading researcher in Open RAN, explains why this shift is so important: “Open RAN is not just a new way of building networks—it’s a step toward a more flexible, cost-effective, and innovation-driven telecom industry.”

As Firecell’s CIO, Cedric Thienot PhD puts it: “We believe that open-source 5G solutions will transform industries and give companies the freedom to build networks that fit their needs—without being locked into a single provider.”
