Open RAN

O-RAN is an open architecture that decomposes 5G RAN elements, it allows interoperability standard for RAN elements including non-proprietary white box hardware and software from different vendors. A 5G O-RAN introduces a new architecture which includes key components in a 5G RAN

O-RAN Radio Unit (O-RU)
for processing the lower part of the physical layer

O-RAN Distribute Unit (O-DU)
for baseband processing, scheduling, radio link control medium access control, and the upper part of the physical layer

O-RAN Central Unit (O-CU)
for the packet data convergence protocol layer 

O-RAN Intelligent Controller (O-RIC)
to gather information from the network and perform the necessary optimization tasks

This split architecture eases the upgrade of the different modules with its native cloud support.
